On July 26, 2008, former Wisconsin resident, Nick “The Goat” Thompson will fight in the biggest fight of his career and in front of one of the biggest US audiences ever when he fights Jake Shields for the vacant Elite XC welterweight title in Stockton, California on CBS. Thompson was asked to take the fight when on again – off again, Drew Fickett was cut from the organization last month. |

Captains log: Star date 07/01/08 or something like that. We have entered a new star system where it is impossible to have your finger punch through the toilet paper when you are wiping. Praise the maker for that, because being strong I frequently push too hard and get poop finger. This is a good way to give your self worms.....Just FYI. I know that you will take this knowledge and use it for the good of mankind. |

On July 19, Fedor Emelianenko and Tim Sylvia will battle not only to score a huge win, but, in the words of Sylvia, "to see if Fedor still has what it takes to be #1." The question is, #1 on whose list? The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts, or WAMMA, was formed last year in order to facilitate cross-promotional fights in order to crown a unified or even undisputed world champion. Unfortunately for WAMMA, its credibility is seriously lacking without the cooperation of the UFC. The UFC currently employs the majority of the world's best fighters. WAMMA's top ten light heavyweight list, for example, consists of ten UFC fighters. And so even when determined by competition instead of just opinion, the UFC alone has the power to determine the best fighters in the world. It has been argued that WAMMA only seeks to make the money that the UFC is not making. Fortunately for us in Wisconsin, no one organization has monopolized mixed martial arts in this state, and so there are plenty of quality fighters who move freely between organizations. However, many of the state's best fighters either tend to work for their trainer's organization, or are promoters who tend to fight for their own promotion. |
